New chainsaw

I'm looking at purchasing a chainsaw for some odd jobs that it will come in handy for. I have the relevant tickets but I'm wondering if any of you guys have had experience with the stihl ms181 or ms211.

I have used a ms211 before and really like them but never used a ms181 and was wondering if it was worthy of getting or going with a 211.

Thanks

MS181 is good and comfortable for long periods of use but I would want something with a bigger engine for logging..

  • The MS181 is perfect for odd jobs but maybe wouldnt be ideal for serious tree surgery. I use mine for procuring stuff for my log burner and don't really do trees. It certainly comes in handy if I'm ever asked to remove fallen branches. It is way better than pulling that cord every time.

      Isn't the MS181 a small petrol saw?

      • Whoops! Just checked, mine is an MSA200. Probably not what was asked in the thread but it's a cracking little machine  anyway, for light use and feeding a logburner.

I've used ms m181 and own ms211. Ms211 definitely got more grunt. Why don't u see if u can get some demo saws from your local dealer?

      Good idea David.

I'm a new start up so not sure if they would do that, I don't know, but it might be worth asking.

I'm thinking more of the ms211 as I know it's a handy little saw

      Thanks

Just have a chat with them, build a relationship. Chances are your spend  thousands there. I'm sure they're want a piece of you hard earned dosh.

  • MS181 is a great little saw. However, if you are considering the 211 (not much more power to be fair) then take a look at the Husky 135. Considerably cheaper than the 181, not sure on paper but in the real world noticeably more powerful than the 181 (we run both types)

I really like the way it handles, just not a fan of husky outboard clutches.

Only ever owned a stihl ms231 chainsaw its never failed , general purpose but its done everything i have asked of it , apart from new chains a clean and safety check its never had a service or needed a part replacing .

If i have to get another chainsaw for logging it will be a swift cordless chainsaw .
