Mowing Patterns

Over the past couple of years I have developed an interest in mowing lawns in non-traditional ways to form interesting patterns. My own lawn, for example, I now mow in a spiral pattern radiating out from a central circular bed, or in another, more complicated way that would take too long to explain here, but it involves semi-circles, lots of string and mowing at different heights. Sadly, I have no pictures as I lost them in a recent computer meltdown :(

It takes a lot longer to mow, but I love the effects it creates. Sort of land art without the need to move hundreds of tons of soil. And easier to remove.

I have been offered a clients lawn to experiment with patterns on next year, and I was wondering if anyone else has done this, or if you have any tips/suggestions. I am keen, for example, to work out a way of mowing a chess board into the middle of the lawn.

Odd, I know. But it passes the time and keeps me off the streets - and that is a very good thing, believe me...

There is only one good book I know...

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Picture-Perfect-Mowing-Techniques-Landscape...

Got it and its a great source of methods and practices (even if a little american.....)

Get someone to treat you for Xmas...

Have tried quite a bit of it and mucked it up on the way to getting it right (with some understanding clients).

Of all the things I do at work for my business, it is one area I personally get great satisfaction from and allows the time to think things thru, sole search and get away from it all - if all that makes sense
  • Thanks guys - glad it's not just me. The book looks interesting and is now on my list for Santa! (is it the same one Fraser?) I'll see what else I can turn up in the US.
