If you use a mower where the handles are designed to fold then consider replacing the threaded spindle star knobs that allows the handle to fold with cam- lock lever handles. Just get the mower in your vehicle, flip the levers and allow the handle to drop down in a vertical position. It does not damage the cables and providing the mower is the last item in (up against the rear door) there is no dead space. The cam-lock levers are a Honda product. I have adapted them to fit Hayter, Older Honda, Lawnflite, and Viking, when I receive the parts.

The shelf across the middle of the van means I can sit ladders, dumpy bags or anything else on top of the mower. As you can also see I have two mowers (a mulcher and a roller), at both the side and the back. This works really well for me. The blower is the only thing I have to move to get the mulcher out. The space behind the roller maybe gets apair of boots shoved in it but I'm not that desperate that I can't do without that wee bit of room.
PS Masport Rotorola already has cam levers to fold the handles down. Fantastic and makes you wonder why any mowers are still made with twirly knobs!
The roller sits between a pair of battens that stop it moving, the mulcher doesn't move for obvious reasons. The only thing that ever shifts is the blasted fuel funnel on the door, but that's because I'm too lazy to fit a proper clip and just use a screw!
I have used cams. I got mine from a bike shop as they are used for saddle adjusting. But I prefer leaving handles fixed if possible. I will spending the weekend, puzzling the neighbours by trying every possible combination of loading to get the most space.
