Mower in the Van - Which way round ?

So which way do you carry your mowers ?. I have tried handle to the rear but then you get a big area behind the mower that you can't use, or if you do, you have to lift stuff out to get to the mower.Handle to the front means that you can use the under the handle space but one can't make a shelf to use the space above the mowers.

  • Hi Peter

If you use a mower where the handles are designed to fold then consider replacing the threaded spindle star knobs that allows the handle to fold with cam- lock lever handles. Just get the mower in your vehicle, flip the levers and allow the handle to drop down in a vertical position. It does not damage the cables and providing the mower is the last item in (up against the rear door) there is no dead space. The cam-lock levers are a Honda product. I have adapted them to fit Hayter, Older Honda, Lawnflite, and Viking, when I receive the parts.
  • Side loading door (transit) mower fits in next to the front partition.
  • Thats some set up. I bet you dread speed bumps :)
  • This is how I do mine.

The shelf across the middle of the van means I can sit ladders, dumpy bags or anything else on top of the mower. As you can also see I have two mowers (a mulcher and a roller), at both the side and the back. This works really well for me. The blower is the only thing I have to move to get the mulcher out. The space behind the roller maybe gets apair of boots shoved in it but I'm not that desperate that I can't do without that wee bit of room.

PS Masport Rotorola already has cam levers to fold the handles down. Fantastic and makes you wonder why any mowers are still made with twirly knobs!

The roller sits between a pair of battens that stop it moving, the mulcher doesn't move for obvious reasons. The only thing that ever shifts is the blasted fuel funnel on the door, but that's because I'm too lazy to fit a proper clip and just use a screw!
  • Unlike ProGuard I don't own a Tardis !. My little trailer is brilliant in that it is totally enclosed & I can go to the pub without taking valuable gear with me. Also it has a good loading ramp. I used to carry one mower but I like my new little Izy so much that I need to take two mowers from now on. Both mowers have to load from the rear. Making the cover lift on gas struts was a big help as it is easy to get at everything.

I have used cams. I got mine from a bike shop as they are used for saddle adjusting. But I prefer leaving handles fixed if possible. I will spending the weekend, puzzling the neighbours by trying every possible combination of loading to get the most space.
