Most efficient cutting pattern

Hi All

I appreciate this question depends on shape and size of lawn but wondered if anyone has given any thought to the most efficient cutting pattern.

I use a 46 inch rear roller, self propelled machine and tend to cut and then return.

For arguments sake if the lawn is 50m by 50m square what do people think.

Cheers - Tommy

  • Firstly I am going to be slightly pedantic and say that mowing a 50m x 50m, which is nearly two thirds of an acre, with a walk behind mower is not efficient to start with, whatever approach you might take.

But if I were forced to do it, then I would do the headlands first to create the turning area and I would mow along the longest length of the area, so less turning overall. So just up and down, back and forth along the longest aspect.

    • Yes makes sense.  I have seen some people cut then go up the other side of the lawn and so on and I wondered if it was for efficiency.  Probably just over thinking it.

    That's a big mower you got , 46 " !!!

Firstly, is the most efficient way the best for the lawn and your client's view of it ? I usually do it in the way that looks best aesthetically whilst mowing in different directions to reduce the amount of grass growing sideways.

With a four wheel mower you have to ensure your wheels don't follow the same path time after time otherwise you get rutting or a washboard effect. That will be most evident when you come to scarify the lawn and the low parts are not touched.

    • Ah sorry good point. I mean cm don't I.  And yes agree that maybe it is better to stripe so it looks well.

    46 inch or centimetre?

    • CM my mistake

I cut a 35 x 27 metre area of grass that was divided into sections by a low wall and paths using a rotary mower without a roller in ever decreasing circles, as recommended by Honda to avoid leaving uncollected cut grass on the half of it I picked the grass up on and lines of cut grass on the other half I mulched.

  • I always go with appearance as the priority. Once that is decided, I then find the most efficient way (which on a square lawn would normally be up and down, working my way across). Hope that helps.

Presumably one of the reasons for buying a roller mower, other than not falling into the flower beds, is to get a striped lawn which is normally achieved by going up and down.

    • Yes Andrew you are quite right.  If you go up and then start to go down again 3 lawnmower widths over and then back down next to the original line.  You still achieve a striped look but it looks much wider.  I was just wondering if people did that for a reason.
