Most difficult access for a job ?

What has been the most difficult access you have encountered for job, no matter what type of work is being performed (ie mowing, rotivating, micro digger etc) ?? I'll start the ball rolling - Digger access (see photo) - tight less than inches to spare either side of a digger, then having to negotiate a 90 degree turn with not much more space (was accomplished by placing plysheets underneath and 'crabbing' digger round).

I once filled in a pond, access was through a terrace house off of Marlow High St (Double yellow lines to park on).

Not a problem, 2t of topsoil was barrowed through, over internal steps and a ridiculous route through this rather old house over the top of cream carpets.

Needless to say we covered the floor with plastic sheeting and scaffold boards on top and didn't lose a single barrow inside!

  • Last year - 6 tonnes of stone, footpath uphill for 100 metres, then 40 steep steps, then along narrow ridge and onto a decking (3.5ft higher than path), then further uphill to build dry stone terrace walling. Took 3 men 3 days using buckets.

Really nice view at top though.
  • 10 tonnes of hard core over 200yrds in barrows as werent allowed to take mechanised equipment over the path...

    2men 4 days

    we were very tired...

Mixed beech and privet hedge cuttings. Only access to garden through front door, hallway and kitchen. Garden 100ft long and hedges on both sides to cut. Priced job accordingly though.
  • By the way, that nasty lump is a hernia! lol. Mind yourself your clients will expect you to keep that rate up.

Just spend my first week of proper work on a site in France, loads of French landscapers there also - just to give all you guys big heads, the UK workforce have a reputation of doing huge amounts of work with just a wheelbarrow. It is quite shocking how over here if it can't be done with a machine and many men it won't be done at all. Watched a concrete plinth for a tiny conservatory being built for one of my neighbours here (2m x 3m) - it had good access for a wide wheelbarrow and a cement mixer. It took 1 5tonne digger, (300mm depth), 5 men, two lorries and 6 days to complete. And I have a load of other similar stories.

10 tons of 10mm lime stone chippings 400 yard barrow up slight incline then spread and rake, did in 7 hours (myself) going flat out.
  • Just pricing up a bad access garden revamp - chips through the house but I don't think the wheelbarrow will fit! What else can I use - upright trug thing on wheels?
  • Not a straight through route tho - have to go left into the kitchen and immediately right to back door - I think the barrow might not fit length wise, width is ok. I'll do a dry run and see how it goes.

Standard wheelbarrow will normally go through a standard door with room to spare. To be safe protect the frame with ply or thick cardboard to prevent damage. Build wooden ramps to get over ledge, sheet floors well and run barrow over boards.
