Mossy lawns

Just took on a new customer and their lawn is absolutely terrible........... so much moss that I'm not even sure there's any grass there!  Anyway, they want me to scarify the moss out... thats no problem but I've pointed out that it will look awful afterwards. Really don't want to spend a lot of time or expense on this one... in fact I wish I'd not taken it on lol.   Now I'm no lawn expert.........  in an ideal world, I'd just say to rip up the lot and returf it but they don't want the expense of that option.    Will I get away with just overseeding all the bare patches with the seed just lying on the surface? I can set the scarifier so that bare soil will be exposed.  In the past, I've only had to deal with small areas, I've mixed bagged topsoil with seed and spread on bare patches but this is too big an area for that.

  • Graham, they can"t expect a decent job without spending the money. We use a compost roller for larger areas which need overseeding but use westland bagged top soil not compost . They are available for under £100 now on ebay and cut the volume of material down dramatically, you may get away with this amd just scarifying but really it should have an application of iron before and after scarifying, selective weedkiller and slow release fertiliser to do it properly. I would not want to do what you suggest as if it does not work it will be you in the firing line , I would say you are not prepared to do a cheap job its done properly or not at all.

    • thanks...........  as you say, I don't want to "endup in the firing line" when it all fails..... and I suspect that might be the case with a not very satisfactory outcome!   I'm tempted to just recommend they use one of these services like Greenthumb though I know some people look on them with contempt!!  There's a couple of other ones I found in my area... Dunstable......... They look like franchises... Lawnscience was another.  I've a decent Eliet scarifier but its not self-propelled ...... its a very large lawn ........ and at 72, just don't fancy doing it really lol... as you know. its really hard going. . Can anyone give any recommendations for lawn specialists in the Bedfordshire area?
