More Ground Elder

In this, my first year of trading, I am being asked by a number of clents to solve their ground elder problems. I have always used glyphosate in the form of Roundup to control it. Does anyone think there is a benefit to using the high strength version made for brambles? The garden that really has me scratching my head belongs to a plantaholic. She has a border full of shrubs and perrenials, with ground elder threatening to smother the lot. She wants to save most of the plants, so I can't just spray the lot. Is it worth digging out the plants she wants, or will the elder have invaded the route system? It is evil stuff, but on the bright side it does provide us with plenty of work!

  • Indeed, sure is a pain in the ass, but you're quite right at least it keeps us busy! I have two large country house gardens with enormous mixed borders both covered in the dreaded weed. One customer agreed to pay the money for me to dig out all existing plants and have a good old dig out of the elder --- but with a disclaimer that I'd never fully get rid of it - as we know, the tiniest bit of white root will have babies! This was 2 years ago and, yes, it's back, but it ain't anywhere near as bad and very easy to nip out as I see it. The other garden, like Rhonda's, is being kept under control by digging as much as possible around the existing plants - sometimes you can spray a patch if there's a big enough gap, and generally having a weekly pull (those were the days, eh!).

I believe smothering it in black polythene for 2 years will eradicate it - though I realise this isnt' an option for you.

    Good luck!

Have you tried Roundup (or variants) applied by a Weedwiper ?

We find them great for getting into difficult areas such as already planted beds/borders.

They are like a hollow golf club that you fill with a thicker roundup solution and it has a replaceable 'wick' at the other end. Cost ~£20-£30.

You just need to 'brush' along the area concerned low down and careful control means you don't hit wanted shrubs.
