Monty Don's man bag.

It's early Sunday morning and the clocks altered overnight, so I made an early start at some office work. I went to get a cup of tea and my wife is watching Monty Don travelling around Europe visiting gardens on catch up TV.

I sat watching for a few minutes then said to my wife, what has Monty got in his man bag, she replied "Cuttings".

So what do you reckon? What would a male gardener of a certain age carry in his man bag whilst out and about? I will own up to owning a canvas man bag as well as being a certain age, the cause of some derision from my wife and daughters on both counts, currently the bag has items such as a back up battery, USB and lighting leads for recharging my phone and camera as well as some camera accessoires. Straight off I have probably identified myself as being an older gent just by having a camera as the youth of today seem take all their photos and videos on their phones, so don't carry cameras around.

So what's in Montys' bag?

Men carrying handbags is a common thing in France. It makes sense as men have things that are usually stuffed (unconfortably) in their pockets.

Sadly the oldfashioned brits tend(ed) to ridicule men who were anything than macho but, thankfully, times are changing.

I don't have a bag and my wife usually gets handed items that I can't put in my pockets but it's a burden for her when we're out.

    Likely items of a bag?

This thread just made me smile.

While I have no problem at all with man bags, I too am one of those blokes who stuffs everything in their pockets because I'd rather be uncomfortable than carry something.  I don't have a wallet, so notes and change are in the front pocket and debit card in the back pocket.  If I think I will get too hot and end up taking my coat off, I wont take it... in case I have to carry it!

I feel a bit daft when I think about it :-)

  • God I cant stand them... I have no reason why other than they dont fit with my style. if my mates saw me strutting around with one ,I'd be mullered for it. .....forever......FOREVER!! :-)

    Cheque book?

Sitting at my desk, my cheque book is by me. The last cheque I wrote was for £100 on the 27th February 2012 for a deposit on a training that was being paid for by the European Social Fund, as I turned up and completed the week long course the cheque was ripped up and thrown away. Prior to that I wrote a cheque 28th July 2011, which was the last time I paid a supplier's account by cheque rather than bank transfer, so that was the last cheque I wrote that was cashed.

So I don't carry a cheque book anymore, I'm told I am behind the times carrying some cash, but paying for a coffee or beer by card seems wrong, you have to have a bit of pocket money.

You could also knock the note book, pen, pencil and camera off your list by using your phone.

That would leave more room for cuttings! When I was a teenager I went on a local horticultural society coach trip to a plant nursery, if I owned the nursery I would have thought twice about letting them in the majority of them came out with bags and pockets full of cuttings. Had they been school kids in a sweet shop everyone would have said their behaviour was disgraceful.

I can knock sunglasses off Phils' list as well, as I'm wearing Reactolight varifocal glasses that darken outdoors.

We are going to Berlin in a few weeks time for several days, my wife passed comment that she must sort out what she is taking as we are going by Ryan Air and that limits the amount of baggage we can take, also she wants spare room in the bag on the waythere to allow for the shopping she wants to bring back. I threw in a comment that Montys' man bag would probably be his full luggage allowance on Ryan Air and my wife replied that's probably why he travelled by train.

Seeing as he has a film crew with him I doubt it's a camera.

  • I got to be honest here, I got a leather man bag which I use to go on holiday that contains my passport, boarding passes etc for the flight etc. Recently I went up to Bath with my wife for the night and carried my man bag around the city. It is a practical bag and comfortable to carry around. I am comfortable to do this in a cosmopolitan city or abroad  but would not be seen carrying it around in my home town......
