have the htc one X and love it but it does need charging every evening.
With all the phones I have had I always by Otterbox Defender cases as they are probably the best protective cases out there.
It's been dropped from ladders onto paving and survived, no problems.
The iPhone is so good I probably wouldn't consider much else (I had an HTC Desire and a Desire S before my iPhone).

If your looking for a tough phone i'd reccomend a Sonim. They are like the Land rover defender of phones, theyre big, ugly and dont have many features but theyre tough as shit! I dropped mine out of my pocket while 40ft up a tree and it didnt even scratch it. The camera is very basic and it doesnt have apps or anything but its made to last. Its also completeley water proof so comes in handy if you want to chat to your girlfriend while your in the shower.

I had a sonim but endless problems in and out of warranty back and forward with them. Had a samsung solid extreme which was faultless but very basic. Just upgraded and got a samsung solid immerse which is the updated version. Has great battery life if you just use normal features. I'm not really one for using the 'smart' applications etc. only 80 quid from amazon. Can be used underwater. Mental
The nokia N8 was the toughest smartphone on the market; mine has more dents than my van with it's 150K miles of heavy use. The thing is just unbreakable, fast, useable, expandable through the sim-card slot, has a built-in FM transmitter so you can play music through any stereo off the phone, it was amazing.
Sadly, Nokia failed to support it and the software wasn't updated, no apps were produced, and it died a death. I've just changed to a Galaxy S3, which is VERY flimsy, and I can't see it lasting any time at all. But, it's a great compromise between useable phone and an I-pad. I won't go over to all my work on it, but it's a huge help to get emails on the go, and to have internet access on a screen you can read.
Major downside is 24 hours battey lif if it's in average use. Fine if you remember to charge it, but not ideal. My new Pure "walkman" type radio is the same. I spend half my life remembering to charge things; how come my kindle lasts a month or so between charges?
If your not bothered about apps what about a blackberry - had one for a couple of years and worked great. Ideal for a decent phone and email .
I have a Samsung something or other. It is a rubber casing, waterfroof, has been dropped on concrete from a height many times, have had it 3-4 years, it's just a phone and perfect for a clumsy landscaper. Got to go soon though as the screen's a bit scratched.
