My much battered bashed and chipped Sony Ericsson Elm J10i2 is finally packing in over two years of daily battering - as a phone it has lasted very well - although the slight drowning in two stroke it got the other day rendered a few keys inoperable now...

So I need recommendation for a phone that will stand a bit of abuse, has a decent camera and most importantly works as a phone and will make and receive calls at a decent volume!!

I borrowed a Sony Xperia fGo  (a supposed 'tough' smartphone) from a friend the other day and I couldn't hear the blooming thing at all!

Not bothered about fancy 'apps' etc although I do use the internet to check emails etc.

02 is my network and I am there to stay - mainly because nothing else works round here...

Anyone any recommendations?

With all the phones I have had I always by Otterbox Defender cases as they are probably the best protective cases out there.

I have an iPhone 4s with an iwalk battery pack which acts as a tough case as well as doubling the life of the battery.

It's been dropped from ladders onto paving and survived, no problems.

The iPhone is so good I probably wouldn't consider much else (I had an HTC Desire and a Desire S before my iPhone).

  • If your looking for a tough phone i'd reccomend a Sonim. They are like the Land rover defender of phones, theyre big, ugly and dont have many features but theyre tough as shit! I dropped mine out of my pocket while 40ft up a tree and it didnt even scratch it. The camera is very basic and it doesnt have apps or anything but its made to last. Its also completeley water proof so comes in handy if you want to chat to your girlfriend while your in the shower.

  • Hi Adam,in a similar position with my phone so have just ordered a nokia lumia 800 from Tesco direct (pick up tomorrow) it has a 8 meg zoom camera , has good feedback and is sim free. The best part is its only £159, even cheaper if you use their clubcard exchange

  • I had a sonim but endless problems in and out of warranty back and forward with them. Had a samsung solid extreme which was faultless but very basic. Just upgraded and got a samsung solid immerse which is the updated version. Has great battery life if you just use normal features. I'm not really one for using the 'smart' applications etc. only 80 quid from amazon. Can be used underwater. Mental

  • I was very sceptical about the move to smartphones with what I thought were big and therefore easily damaged screens; however my iPhone 4s (my 3rd iPhone now) is a must have tool for me now. I hate apple for there politics but there is no denying they make flawless and sturdy products that even us landscape contractors cannot now do without.
  • The nokia N8 was the toughest smartphone on the market; mine has more dents than my van with it's 150K miles of heavy use. The thing is just unbreakable, fast, useable, expandable through the sim-card slot, has a built-in FM transmitter so you can play music through any stereo off the phone, it was amazing.

Sadly, Nokia failed to support it and the software wasn't updated, no apps were produced, and it died a death. I've just changed to a Galaxy S3, which is VERY flimsy, and I can't see it lasting any time at all. But, it's a great compromise between useable phone and an I-pad. I won't go over to all my work on it, but it's a huge help to get emails on the go, and to have internet access on a screen you can read.

Major downside is 24 hours battey lif if it's in average use. Fine if you remember to charge it, but not ideal. My new Pure "walkman" type radio is the same. I spend half my life remembering to charge things; how come my kindle lasts a month or so between charges?

  • If your not bothered about apps what about a blackberry - had one for a couple of years and worked great. Ideal for a decent phone and email .

  • I have a Samsung something or other. It is a rubber casing, waterfroof, has been dropped on concrete from a height many times, have had it 3-4 years, it's just a phone and perfect for a clumsy landscaper.  Got to go soon though as the screen's a bit scratched.
