Mercedes sprinter towing capacities ?

I've read that post 09 sprinters with the 316 engine and  above can be plated to have a towing capacity of 3500kg creating a gross train weight of 7000kg. Does this apply to all 316 vans or does it have to be specified when ordering from new ?

I've tried my best on the net but cant find out for sure.

I understand that quite a few iveco 3.5t vans can tow the full 3500kg but i would much rather stay with mercs to keep a one manufacture fleet as i think it looks "tidier".
