Mechanical Lawn Edgers

Are they worth the investment?I have never tried one or actually seen one being used. For me doing mostly the same domestic lawns on a weekly or fortnightly basis I don’t think they would provide a benefit over a bent shaft strimmer. However, would be interested in what other members have to say about them.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UvAZ-w5uxg

  • Tried out the Stihl attachment that goes on the end of a strimmer once........ couple of hours use.... worked quite well but to be honest, the finished result wasn't as good as longhandled shears though that might have just been the way I used it! For domestic gardens, I don't really reckon its worth the bother......... its quite nice and relaxing going round with the shears for a few minutes and I'd miss it!

We've got a Victa multi-wheel edger that we use only now at a very large site we maintain. It's good because it's easier to get a straight line over a long distance.

But like Pro Gard said, it's one more machine to fit in an already crowded vans. The fact it sits at the rear of our Unit probably speaks more about it than anything else.

We do have a Stihl edger that gets occasionally used by a couple of the guys along paths etc but I tend to use the old method of sharp side shears, or if renovating an edge - scaffold plank and 1/2 moon edger. There's something strangley satisfying about doing it that way !!

You need to find a friendly dealer who would let you trial one...

    Some tools suit some people.........

It's all about a good set of edging shears if you want a good finish with the minimum of fuss plus a half-moon for any adjustments to the edge
  • u need a lot of it to make it a worthwhile investment -

i dont do it its rubbish work

use half-moon, shears or border spade . do staff do it for you?
  • speaking to the head gardener at Audley End house a few years ago , he told me they try every type of mechanical edger that comes on the market but always go back to shears . And they do a lot of edging !
  • I agree with everyone on this, I bought a lawn edge attachment but only used it a couple of times. I found that it took about the same time, but you only need to lose concentration for a split second and you've cut a great chunk out that you didn't want! A waste of money if you ask me, just keep your edging shears nice and clean and sharp, and let's face it -it's one of the most satisfying and peaceful of jobs with the shears, once you have got your edges nice and short with the strimmer!
  • - you got one?! – and it's strong enough to do the edges first time when they are really overgrown? - I'll get one!
