Marks on Indian stone

We have a private client who has recently had a large Indian stone patio laid in a dark grey by another contractor, it has been sealed and not been walked on until the seal has set. It joins a lawn which is laid on a heavy clay soil which is used by children and dogs

The stone now has orange clay marks caused by foot traffic from the lawn, the client has found these impossible to remove even with a pressure washer and various proprietary cleaners.

It's impractical to lay plastic grass or to stop the lawn being used in wet conditions.

Any ideas on how to remove the marks?

  • There's a useful site which covers pretty much everything to do with paving    https://www.pavingexpert.com/stains    For some reason, the link doesn't quite work.......  its under "installation topics" and then  "repair, alteration and maintenance" ..   The removal of iron stains is down near the bottom.   They might have to avoid using iron in the future though  if it was thoroughly watered in after applying and ensure none was left on the paving after application, it shouldn't be a problem.

Not helpful I know,.... but I guess they will become a unique feature of their patio :(

If the clay has a high iron content, and the kids transfer the iron to the patio there is not a lot they can do, other than take it up with whoever laid the patio.

I once (and only once) got moss killer onto a similar patio.... it took bottles and bottles of remover to get the stains out to the client's relative satisfaction. They then sacked me .... but by this time we had fallen out so that didnt hurt

  • I've removed rust marks from sandstone before using a wire brush wheel in a drill, it worked a treat, but would definitely need testing on an inconspicuous area first! Stone cleaning/grinding 'cups' are also available for small angle grinders, very aggressive, but certainly do the job!

    • you can also get wire brushes to fit on the strimmer head............... I've used one to clean a load of moss from some brickwork and it worked pretty well.

      • Yeah, I've got one of those too, Graham. Quite aggressive, but for moss and weeds they can be useful. That said, I've probably only used it once in about 5 years!

  • Problems solved sodium hypochlorite has sorted

    • That's good to know.
