manual augers

How do you get on with manual augers for posts?  For a light duty 3 inch square post (or banging in a 4 inch pole) they make a beautiful hole.

When the ground is good they go in very easily.  In some ways they go in too easily and you end up with a deeply buried augur.

On the down side, getting the earth out of the hole is tricky unless you go for 'small bites'.   Then I have to pry the clay core out of the corkscrew.  They are ideal for checking 'is this a good place to use my post hole digger or will I hit a brick?' type preliminary investigations.
