Makita top handle chainsaw

Is anyone using the Makita top handle saws? Either the single battery 18v, or twin battery 36v?

Intended use is fruit tree pruning and renovation.

My little efco top handle saw has died a death.

I'm a big fan of makitas hedge cutters (and coffee machine) and hoping the saws will be as good.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

  • i have them both. 36v is quite heavy. Plenty of power. Only for bigger stuff really. The 18v is very light. Prob 3 inch maximum cut. You won't get the neat cut of a Silky. However i hardly use my Silky now. Search on Arbtalk and info on a different set up of bar, chain, and sprocket. I don't think you'll be disappointed.  Use 5ah or 6ah batteries...

    • Thank you Richard, sounds like the 18v is for me. I'll pop over to arbtalk .

      • If you look on Youtube- Yorkshire's numero 2 gardener. I have put a clip on using the saw. Thanks

I watch your video, it looks good.

How long does a 5mp battery last approx and is it easy to get parts?

          • Since most cutting is intermittent i don't really know but with small stuff it does last a good while. Prob doing tree work might get 45 min out of it but emphasise i can't say for sure. 3 year warranty so not too much worry regards parts and a few parts suppliers online. Thanks

Thanks. Not to shabby run time.

              • Yes- i would opt for the 5ah. The 6ah seem to be heavier and are longer charge time.

  • Yesterday my new Greenworks 40V top handle saw arrived. Not tried it yet. Paid £87 on Amazon Warehouse. Had batteries already but ordered another one for £40 from the same seller. Greenworks are in some kind of partnership with Stihl apparently so hoping it will be ok for small cutting jobs
