Making a holiday work when running a small business

A recent survey found that three quarters (76%) of small business owners and entrepreneurs forego holidays in order to keep their business running smoothly.

But while there may never be a good time to take a holiday when you’re the boss, entrepreneur Lara Morgan says time out can benefit your business.

It's always such a hard one! But I'm having a long weekend this weekend. From Thursday to Monday. Clients all know. Minimum interruption as I have squeezed it all in before and after.

Normally we stop over Christmas so use that. I think the smaller you are the harder it is to take holiday sometimes
  • We have went in January or February this last few years, causes little disruption. That will have to stop in the next couple we years as the boys reach school age though. Been to Kenya, New York, Lanzarote and Tenerife, all nice at that time of the year.
  • December, January up to February are holiday times. Hardly any disruptions.

I take about 2 weeks of the summer holidays of spread through the 6 weeks and don't take as much work on over the summer holidays in general. It's actually one of the quieter times I think as people are away or spending money on kids etc. I used to try and work every day of the holidays but the kids grow up quick and I don't want to miss anymore of it. Life's to short to work all the hours God sends! Will be a quiet week this week as we have got torrential rain forecast first bit today raining as hard as I ever remember!!
But it's ok stop at home the work will be there tomorrow and if I'm honest if the clients don't understand they are not worth trying to keep imo
    • Yes, do enjoy the kids. Before you know they are all grown up. I am actually hoping for Grandchildren now.

The weather is terrible. Everything is wet, sloshy and muddy. No fun. Seems like I am only going to work a little on Thursday or Friday if at all. As I worked the last couple of weekends I am taking this weekend off, no matter what. So this is like a holiday in a way.

        Make the most of it!!
Just been ringing round this weeks clients all except 1 were fine with a play it by ear approach and the other 1 still wanted a set time as usual so I will be doing that no matter what the weather is doing I suppose it's only a small one and the guy is 94 and can't get his head round time changes so I don't mind really
        • You are being way too nice. That is so unreasonable by the customer!!! Your health and safety comes first. Customers like that are a no-no. Don't care about age. If you get sick or injure yourself is he going to pay for your time off? I did that once and learned a hard lesson being off for 2 weeks nursing a bad cold and pneumonia. Needing Antibiotics etc. Plus I slipped in the garden and ended up with a big painful bruise on the leg that really had me worried. Never again! As mentioned above, customers like that get sanitised out of the portfolio.
