Yes. Magnolia Grandiflora.
If it's evergreen with large leaves and large open ivory/cream flowers it will be M. grandiflora and this is one of the summer flowering species.
Flowers are scented if you catch them when the buds are breaking open, but it disappears when they have opened to full bloom.
thanks for the replies have never come across the grandiflora before when do you prune and how hard
Magnolias are flexible and hardy, and adapt well to a variety of different garden spaces. With over 20 varieties to choose from, all with stunning large flowers in different colours, the space that you have to fill with a magnolia tree will usually determine which variety to choose from.
Magnolias can vary from small to large, with magnolia trees and larger shrubs making a good choice for outdoor borders. Smaller varieties like Magnolia stellata, ‘Jane’, liliiflora ‘Nigra’, and ‘Susan’ are good options for patios as they can grow well in a pot planter. Evergreen Magnolia, like Magnolia grandiflora, can be a good choice for being close to a wall where you want it to grow up the wall.
Yeah I've seen magnolia's flower a little this time of year and rhodendrons. I think they get a little confused with the warmer weather. I think you prune in July. Rule of thumb for shrubs, prune after flowering. But not true in every case. Never needed to hard prune a grandiflora before. It's worth investing in the RHS pruning and training book. Mines ancient and knackered!
We prune a Grandiflora hard about every 3 years, usually in May and it responds well and is a very stong grower.
