  • I use a Stihl MS260 good all round saw with 18" bar. it all ordepends on what bar size you need realy, and also just how occasionaly you are going to use it.
  • A 361 will probably last you for ever with the work you propose...get one you won't be disappointed....

Get the shortest bar length you need, it will be cheaper, lighter, easier to sharpen and work with.

Do consider training and don't forget your safety stuff ;-)
  • yes good advice used saws before so i like stihls and thinking 18" bar would sit nice or even 16" what about Tanaka they are Japanese this is model

  • Stick to Stihl...when it comes to saws it's either Stihl or Husky ;-) and even that choice is a personnel thing as opposed to what's best. Tanaka make good stuff I have two of their hedge trimmers but saws are as above.
  • yes i would think that i will have to be on lookout for a ms 361 thanks for the advice is there a wesite that shows best ways to sharpen the chains ??
  • i would not of guessed that of the ms361 i will have to take a look at the ms260 then they look okay i would of thought maybe little underpowered though but you have experience with them and that counts a lot cheers for the help
  • Iv only ever bogged my MS260 once and i was logging 20" diamater Oak that had been sitting for about 6month-1year so was a tad damp, nothing else phases it, I only brought on a recemendation of a few tree surgons.

Also with the Stihls if the saw has an orange handel or ends in an odd number it is for occasional use.

Ive cut all manner of stuff with a 260 in the past, they are faultless for the money. Keep it sharp and it will do what you want.

I once felled a 35" at base horse chestnut with one on an 18" when the 590 I had cut out on me..... over cut the butreses off and a deep bore into the gob..... not the saw of choice but it did it!
  • i have a stihl ms 280 cbg i .......... 15'' and 18'' bars. always use stihl chains/ rollomatic bar and oil.

    always fill chain-bar oil !

i have a ryobi 44cc? for spare. my second hand 240? pots&piston went from previous 2/oil neglect.

got rid of and older 45cc ryobi. and use a stilh t-200 for trees/pruning (2nd hand of e-bay £230)

    and use a stihl pole-pruner 10/12? " on end of combi-system
