LOADING 1 TONNE BAGS

Somebody on the forum described a genius method for filling 1 tonne sacks, which involved a roll of rigid plastic which placed in the bag unfurls to hold it open and which can then be easily withdrawn once the integrity of the bag is established.

My question is: What is the material recommended for this?

My assumptions are that it needs to be about 4m x a minimum of 600mm, and to be practical needs to roll up quite tightly for storage in van etc. when not in use.

  • Good job I am not overlooked by any neighbours. A camping mat reverse rolled gives the right sort of effect, but would need to be double length to do the job properly and I am sure there would be a more elegant and less bulky way of doing this, if I knew for what material I was looking.

  • Is this really an issue? I've never felt the need for something to hold a bag open, just cram the material in. I think it would take more time setting this up than it would just getting on with the job.
  • I stand the bag on it's side, if there is a breeze then facing the breeze as this then helps keep the bag open, I then stand in the bag facing the debri and scoop it between my legs until I have enough in to hold the bag open and then tip the bag upright and continue to fill it from the top....you can save too much bending if you like by using a wire grass rake to drag stuff through your legs initially and even like a shovel with brambles etc to load in the top ;-)

  • John - what type of materials / waste are you thinking of loading into the bags?

For leaves etc., I just rake them into a big pile then lay the bag on its side and place my feet on the bag and pull the over side up so over my backside and just rake the leaves in. With back kicking and a few more rakes, I can get the bag 3/4 filled.

  • How about heavy duty root barrier as used with bamboo.

One tonne bags are mighty heavy and cumbersome when loaded, especially when full of grass cuttings.
Four road pins, one holding each corner, work (but it's a pain carrying the pins around).

  • i fold the top half of the bag down and once it's getting up to the half way level i flip it back up.
don't fancy carrying a large lump of springy plastic around, when folding the bag makes it easy.

Although not designed for tonne bags, works well with 70-100 litre sacks, we use ours a lot.

It allows us to put a greater volume into a bag, allowing much more compaction, especially leaves.

I might give that a try, I usually have a couple in the van as I use them for fertilising and measuring large gardens :)

  • Try using Correx. You can buy it in large sheets from any builders merchants. WWe use it for making stone templates but it can be used for a whole host of things
