No direct experience, I would only say that it sounds like a challenging position- baking hot in summer and salt wind in winter. Is the irrigation system in good order?
Make it clear to the client that it isn't fit and forget, they can expect constant ongoing replacements and you won't be liable!
I worked with a Platipus G-Wall system which has 320 planting pockets and a drip irrigation system which requires the client to turn on and off. This wall is in full sun for half the day and a small section in full sun all day in Summer. In the first year it was planted with ferns, heuchera, pachysandra, vinca, hakonechloa, tiarella, bergenia and geranium sanguineum. It did really well for the first year until the customer went on holiday and some plants didn't recover. G-Wall has small planting pockets so dries out very quickly. Also needs plants without big root systems. At the end of the second year we had to replace most of the Heuchera, some of the ferns which we replaced with Aspleniums and we lost the Bergenia. Most successful were Pachysandra, Hakonechloa, Carex oshimensis, Santolina Lemon Fizz, Geranium sanguineum, Erigeron. Ajuga fared ok but grew quite slowly. We came to the conclusion that it would need significant replanting at least every other year as plants outgrew their planting pockets so we've now left 20% of the spaces free for Ivy leaf geranium plug plants each year. Pictures are first and second summers. This is in Bristol. year when it looked amazing before the holiday!
I'd say your first stop is a sophisticated irrigation system
There are a few ideas in this case study from Pritchard and Pritchard. https://green-roofs.co.uk/case/living-wall-for-city-university/
A thought... of something to aim for :)
We were going through Singapore airport earlier in the month (as you do!). THere was this massivo wall garden... I would say around 15m tall and longer than a couple of football pitches. The whole thing was totally faultless.
WIll the link work?? Here goes https://photos.app.goo.gl/jjtzuj1NvoTzPv8f8
Evening guys.
Great ideas and advice.
Irrigation is in place, Irrigation chap will be in in March, renewing parts and checking everything over.
Thanks
A little update, the living-wall has been planted up and looking good.
We used two varieties of sedum, thyme, ophipogeium, saxifrage.
Thanks for the advice
Just a note on how long plants are expected to last- I sw some walls in London, where one the main plants used was 1L Fatsia! They would give a year tops before they were too big, and they were about 50% of the planting.
I've told client about two years.
Many thanks 😊
