Level 3 alert for severe cold weather

Issued Boxing Day and current until Wednesday 31st December.

From the Met Office

There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 1500 on Friday and 1200 on Wednesday in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.

Low pressure, tracking southeastwards over central and southern England later Boxing Day and overnight into Saturday 27th, is expected to give a period of sleet and snow across the Midlands, some northern parts of East Anglia and southern parts of both NW England and Yorks and Humberside. Some significant snow accumulations are possible, especially on higher ground. Strong winds will develop in places for a time, exacerbating the chill.

As the low clears away southeastwards, cold air will move south across the whole of England giving a risk of wintry showers and icy conditions across England for the rest of Saturday. Sunday to Tuesday, high pressure brings lighter winds but with widespread night frosts and freezing fog patches which may linger well into the day in places. The combination of both night time sharp frosts and daytime low temperatures gives a high probability of mean temperatures widely 2 degrees Celsius or lower. Later Wednesday, strengthening southwesterly winds may lift temperatures across northern England but it is likely to remain cold elsewhere.

Same down in Surrey, in fact on opening the curtains earlier it almost looked like it had snowed lightly. Brrrrrrr.

We've had about four days of hard frosts (down to minus five). The last couple of days we've also had a fair amount of mist/fog resulting in hoar frosts.

This morning it looks like it's snowed, with a build-up on the plants.

The dead sedum stalks covered in ice (top image) is the reason I never cut back flower stems on herbaceous perennials before the end of February.

After today the temperature is set to reach double figures:(

  • We are going to experience a pulse effect over the next few weeks with rain over much of the UK until 3 pm on the 3rd Jan then it will get cold again and stay like that until Wed and once more a succession of low pressures with wind and rain will head over us ( Thursday and Sunday being the main days) The further north you are the more chance you will have of snow on the back end of these as the demarcation " battle line"  between low and high pressure is  the Midlands.

Watch my weather forecasts on here ( they are normally chiltern specific but i can give local forecasts for LJ members if they ask) . I make sure they are as good as possible as I do gritting and snow clearing as well as send 25 blokes out  doing grounds maintenance, landscaping and sports marking.
