Laying Limestone Slabs

Hi all

Which would you say is best for the topic.

I have an adge to work too and its solid on one side but I will need to form a solid edge on the other, do I lay the slab on sand with a scalp base or a mortar bed.

Another question, how do I finish a stream bank edge to stop corrosion and also create the solid edge for the limestone slabs.

thanks

  • Natural stone paving should always be laid on a compacted base of MOT type and a full bed of mortar. This stream does complicate things a bit. How close do you intend the patio to be to the stream and does the stream ever flood ??
    Could you post a picture?

  • Morning Steve

The stream is man made which pumped and filtered, its for effect and we have a filter which has a by-pass pipe so it can't over fill or run dry.

  • The area to the right of images 2 is to be slabbed around the BBQ, it leads down to the side entrance which is sloped

  • Ahhh, a man made stream. That makes it much easier. You could probabrly get away with a concrete haunch to retain your sub base but if it was me I would put a footing in and then a course of concrete blocks as a retainer. Its belt and braces but it will provide the best long term solution against migration

  • You need to be extremely careful when laying limestone. Certain "flavours" will react with OPC based bedding solutions and there is no work through other than lift and replace.
