Lawn treatment in this weather?

Two weeks ago when there was a frost, we saw a lawn company treating the next door lawns with a liquid treatment. We were bit shocked at what we had seen and expected to return a fortnight later to a burnt lawn. The lawn is now a lush green with just the moss that's brown. The same company are as we speak treating another lawn in the same way with very heavy frost on the lawns. How can you compete against this when you have been telling all your customers that it's to cold to treat when quite obviously it's not ?

  • Just got back in as 20p size snow-flakes are falling heavy North of Leeds, but saw GT treating two lawns this morning, and it is making me think the same thing, especially as work is slowing up alot right now, and I would of loved to move back some lawn work from Sept (busy) to now.

As the man says do what you think is right.

In the past fortnight I've seen a frozen lawn being scarified and my dad's neighbours had their lawn cut on Monday.

Am I bothered - no. It is their reputation that will suffer not mine.

concentrate on your own reputation, the thing to think of is do you want to risk weakening the lawn while its frosty. you never know 2 weeks time it might be a warm spell and even better conditions where you can apply a decent autumn fertiliser.

the big problem with some franchisees is they dont know the difference, only what theyre told on there 2 weeks training course and to them it doesnt matter if the lawn is damaged after they have taken the money as they dont have to mow it or repair it.
  • I wouldn't have an issue applying (spraying) Iron sulphate if the weather conditions permit. However most of the clients lawns with moss issues have already been done and taken care off as with the winter feeds.

Saying that done one the other week - slight moss problem and the lawn is doing alright. If you know the lawn and of course local conditions you should be able to make a judgement call on what is required and when. But I do agree a certain lawn treatment company undertake their treatments by schedules and not requirements - guess we will be seeing them scarifying next week! :-)
  • oh i was going to 'scarify' one end next week ??

i feel its wrong time (a bit late) ,but its been fed scotts winter/moss remover they supplied...........expensive one , white bag?

but i dont know the 'facts' ? it needs dead moss out and she asked me to do it ( i think )....?
    help please !

  • id always scarify in the spring, apply moss killer then a couple of weeks later scarify then as its spring the grass will start growing leave it a week to fertilize. if you scarify in the winter it thins the grass and gives more space for the moss to grow back over the winter months when the grass isn't growing
  • agreed

you should always follow a scarify with a further moss treatment aswell to make suure any remnants are dead. the right fert strengthens the grass. should always fert in spring with n+p anyway to get some denser growth

ive got 4 days solid scarifying to do but im not doing it till im pretty sure there wont be a frost for a week so i can fertilise aswell

Why do you want to fertilise? grass will have stopped growing due to frost.
Due to grass having stopped growing if you scarify now grass will not grow back, you will leave bold patches for more moss to spore on, leave scarifying till mid Febuary or later if you can.
  • agree id never scarify now for the same reason as i mentioned above
