Lawn treatment

Evening all. I have recently joined the Network and set up my new gardening business in July 2021. So far it's been very rewarding and I have been able to build a loyal customer base.

As I head I to 2022 I wanted to ask for some advice on lawn care treatments

Some of my customers use Greenthumb but have asked if I would take over this from them. The questions I have are

1. What type of lawn feed etc to use

2. Do you offer scarification as a separate treatment

3. Re omendations for a scarifier/aerator

Any kind of ad ice would be appreciated and also an idea of pricing would be I valuable.

Thanks

Stuart

One - there is no 'one size fits all in terms of lawn feed' - unlike what Green thumb try and tell clients.

Depends if you want quick green up/long life/ with moss control (or not) and so, so much more.

Thats before you get into soil sampling and testing.

If looking to spray weeds, you will need to take your PA1/6 assesment.

Progreen (site sponsors) are always happy to help and advise.

There's a lot more to doing lawn care well than doing it the Green Thumb way - trouble is their marketing strategy makes clients think the service is worth peanuts sadly....

  • Does anyone know what Green Thumb actually apply? What the ingredients are?

    • I don't know whats in it other than it must have extremely high levels of Nitrogen , every lawn I tend to grows like the clappers and Thach levels go through the roof

One of the commonly used ones is fast release 40-0-0....

  • the big lawncare co buy in bulk then sell it on to there franchisees so you wont beet them on costs for the same fert and weed killer but you will be able to buy the right type of fert for the persific lawn you are doing

scarification is a separate job i preferd a slit tyne scarifier

if you are scarifing for moss it needs treating about a fortnight before you do it and you will get about 4x the amount of rubbish out than you think you would

  • Stuart, we started lawn treatment a few years ago mainly through clients getting fed up of the one size fits all approach from the nationals , you will not be able to offer a professional service at their price levels. Nor should you want to! We are at least twice as expensive but as our main business is maintenance we view it as the icing on the cake!

We hire a scarifier as and when, decent scarifiers are expensive to purchase particularly if this isn't your core business and get a hard life.

We charge separately for treatment and scarifying, on pricing an average charge for fertiliser treatment of 200 sq metres is £50 plus vat, scarifying the same area if we have to take the waste away £100 plus vat.

One thing not to skimp on is a decent spreader, in our experience avoid Agrifab, and all the Chinese generics, we started off with these and they don't spread evenly.

Buy an ICL SR 2000 or Spyker SPY50-1P, not all Spyker spreaders have the accuway system allowing you to adjust the spread pattern, this model does. Check before buying!
