Im no expert and have no experience but, what ever is used, i would of thought you need atleast a couple of inches between the real grass and the astro turf, to allow the lawn to be strimmed on the growing edge to stop it creeping into the fake stuff and looking messy.
Pressure treated timber to a depth of 6 inches minimum or for much improved longevity, perhaps a single line of bricks, paviours or cobbles. Or possibly a single line of decking board!
I did think about timber edging, although my thought was how to fix it in place, so it doesn't move when being mowed or the kids kick/knock it, without the need for concreting it in place
Galvanised metal stakes like here or angle iron that sits just below soil level, say 10-12" long, would mean digging a bit of trench either way though for access for screws (stainless steel) etc so could be disruptive! You can of course also use treated timber stakes instead, but they soon start to rot just as the timber edge will after only a few years.
