Lawn Renovation

Went to see a lawn today that was in a shocking state. The customer had started to try and sort it out himself in the spring but gave up after ½ an hour of scarifying !

The lawn is approx 500m2 and is jam packed full of moss, thatch and weeds. Where the grass cover is good its good but where its bad its very bad with lots of black dead grass patches from an overdose of weed, feed and moss killer.

My initial comment was that his best bet was to re-turf but he nearly fell over when I mentioned a ball park figure of £5000

My next option was a full on renovation as follows

1. Treat weeds now
2. Treat moss late summer
3. Scarify hard early autumn
4. Follow on with aeration, seed and top-dress

When I started looking a bit deeper into it I now think I could be on a scarifier all day long and still not get down to anywhere near soil level so am having a re-think.

What are your thoughts on using a turf cutter to take the top off and then arerating, seeding and top-dressing. Anyone done anything like this before and what were the results/pitfalls.

I want to give him as good a result as I can but obviously on a budget.

All comments and bright ideas welcomed.
