lawn problem - anyone identify this?

A customer of mine has had this lawn down for about two months and been looking after it with no problems. This weekend this black powder has appeared on the grass in some patches. Its in isolated areas and the grass appears healthy once its removed.

Its on a south facing well drained garden.

any answers as to what it is and how to solve it gratefully received
