Depends on how quick you wam it to be lawn. I would deep scarify, aeration, top dress and seed. Or spray it off, rotavate and lay new turf.

    • Cheers Dave, it's for a friend who's selling his house so just going to do it for him before he puts it on the market and he doesn't want to spend much , can I use glyohosate and after a fortnight just rotivate that and relay new turf? There's not exactly much grass anyway is there,

      Will top soil be required??

  • No need to rotovate. The ground is currently firm so why rotovate it and then have to compact it all over again.

Spray it and kill it off. Then strim it down low as to leave very little grass. Level up with top soil where needed or even an inch or two over the whole area and then lay the new turf with the scaffolding plank method.

I have laid thousands of metres of turf over the years useing this method and it works perfectly. I did this a lot in the cemeteries that I maintained. The turf will root into this type of ground just as quickly.

This method is much faster, requires a great deal less work and so can be cheaper for the client.

    • It's 20m2

I.just thought.rotivate would be better as wouldn't need to.get any extra top soil?

      • Yes but you need so little of it. Here, screened top soil is only £7.50 for half a tonne if you collect it. You might get away with either half a tonne or maybe one tonne. It goes a long way if you are starting with pretty flat ground already.

It’s still quicker and easier than rotovating.

This job was done like I described. With a thin build up of top soil. Very little was used. Ignore the shrub with edging stones around it. I was asked to leave it by the cleint.

How did it do? Our Honda is so heavy it does more damage in the wet than we want....
