I have a client who would like one of her front garden borders to become a lavender "hedge". Soil conditions etc. are more than suitable and I was toying with some of the French lavenders - Lavandula Stoechas due to the sweetly scented flowers and fairly long flowering season. The border is about 6M in length and approx. 0.4M width.I assume that I would probably need tthree plants per M?Can anyone recommend a good supplier who sells mail order / on-line unless local to Berkshire / Surrey and any suggestions as to what type lavender I should purchase.

  • I would be careful using L. stoechas as they aren't as hardy as the English lavenders and can be killed by a cold winter. I usually plant 3 per m but often use Lavender "Hidcote" which is a more compact variety - useful if bordering paths etc. "Munstead" is also a good dwarf variety, widely availble and reliable (both good darker shades). The species L. alternifolia is bigger and tougher and cheaper but a much larger plant so fewer per m (and a more insipid colour). Sorry I dont know any local suppliers.
  • Hi

We have put a few Lavender hedges in and even did one on monday, 2 to the M is fine and find stoechas a good choice as we have one that flowers to nearly christmas at one of our clients. We also sometimes use the other sorts depending on what a client wants.

We use Hilliers cash and carry off the A30 in Sunningdale for all our plants, 50% off retail prices normally and if they dont have it in stock they can get it in quickly for you.
  • Excellent - Thanks guys.
  • hi Graeme- i've done a common English lavender hedge here and its great- been flowering all summer- its straight Lavandula angustifolia- smells fab, the bees love it and makes a decent size hedge- would really recomend it- i planted mine in a zigzag so its nice and dense and not one thin row if that makes sense.

there's loads of wholesale nurseries in Surrey- where are you? Hilliers is good as Tim says but there's alot of others- i love Northill Nurseries at Chobham near Woking- http://www.northhillnurseries.co.uk/ or Dingley Dell also Chobham http://www.dingleydell.co.uk/
  • sorry can't edit my reply- i didn't read the size of your bed properly- obviously you don't want a wide hedge- so zigzag won't be necessary! :-)
  • I agree with two per metre. We have used an excellent supplier J Jackson and Sons on 01276 88028 - Peter Tilbury is the man to talk to with decent sized and good quality plants. I think they are based near Chobham.
  • Peter Tibury from Jackson's of Chobham was brilliant. Great stock and very fair prices.
  • We're selling a good range online from the spring and I looked at several suppliers for it before settling on Downderry in Sussex.

  • Graeme,

In my opinion, don't touch Stoechas at this time of year as they will probably die should we have a wet/cold Winter.

Most have been grown under protection so are as soft as butter, one frost and they will turn black.

Having sold Stoechas in Surrey for the last 29 years, it's good to sell them in September as you get to sell replacements in March for the ones that have died.

Stick to Hidcote/Munstead, tried and tested and Winter hardy.

I will if you like find you some very nice ones grown in Dorset, and even deliver them to you. Would be nice to see you and catch up.

With luck you could be my first ever sale in over two years through Landscape Juice?

    Kind regards,

    Steve
  • Now you tell me Steve! :-) I must admit I did like their 10L pots of Flathead but as previously stated may not be that winter hardy.

I will however need some Munstead and will Email you my requirements.
