Hi Nigel,  I've just come across this too, in Kingswood. Only certain plants affected though. Looked like it had a powedery mildew and this 'shothole' like described on RHS website

    • I agree Kevin, both of those.

    • Wow small world around here in Surrey. I'm also Kingswood based Kevin & plenty of it around here....Probably because every millonaire up here thinks Laurel is 'the' plant to have.

I think it is an awful plant & refuse to incorporate it in any planting I do. I spent 12 hours reducing two plants, yes TWO, down with chainsaws last week.It should be banned, there are many more benificial hedging plants to consider. I have lost cleints in the past because I refuse to plant it, I think I would rather use Knotweed lol.

      • Yeah agreed, god awful thing !!!

There's plenty work around there Neil. Find it hard to escape the place sometimes. It can be quite relieving going back to some of the smaller gardens after spending some time in Kingswood.

As for the laurels, they'll prob just rip it all out and throw something else in, as they do round here. Whats a few quid here and there haha

Yep I would go with shothole or eupropolella, it can be combatted with with a systematic fungicide before it gets too much of a hold.

    • I'd be surprised if fungicied worked against shotholing as it's a bacterial problem.  It would help with the mildew, but the main cause I've found is dryness, if it's possible to water that might help.
