Hi Samantha, I'm assuming Windows rather than MAC. If MAC ,then I know nothing...
For windows, key things for me would be whether you'll use the portability much, ie going to customers / meetings, and will it be connected to a separate monitor. I do carry mine around occasionally, so don't want anything too big, going for a 15.6" screen with full HD capability. I normally have it plugged into a 24 or 27" monitor at home.
Performance won't be an issue with most machines - lots of choice in the £400 to £600 price range will suffice. For speed best to go at least 256GB SSD (solid state drive) and 8GB ram.
I use the above criteria, like Dell or HP and replace every 4 years or so. At the moment, PC world have at £499:

Seems good enough...but keep looking as they do have good reductions every so often.
