  • Next door to one of my customers replaced their whole back garden grass with fake grass last year. The whole garden is on a slope down to the house. Guess what happened one particular heavy rain storm afterwards- yes - all around the rear of the house was flooded to a depth of about 8inches. My customers house, exactly the same but with real grass, was fine.

Yes I saw this on Twitter earlier and made me think, whilst stood on a sodden riverbank and soft lawn (I soon packed up and went home) I recall hearing something on the radio years ago about what sized area was being turned over to parking and re-landscaping just front gardens... thats the ones we can see from a road without knowing whats happening in peoples back gardens like this example above. The comparison was areas such as the size inside the M25, and X number of Hyde Parks.....

  • i think that "roof gardens" might be the way forward

    • I have a sedum/living roof on my extension and it is a small contribution to reducing localised flooding plus creating a nectar bar for beneficial insects.

I strongly believe Green Roofs are a key concept for the future in terms of flood management, biodiversity, insulation etc.

We just need the mass house developers to adopt and design accordingly.

We are lucky to look after a residential mutli storey development with a large '1st floor' green roof area that attenuates the roof water flow and provides large seating / recreation area for the occupants.

It's cooling in the summer, serene and an enjoyable environment.

        • Absolutely need to get developers to think outside the box a lot more and to educate people of the merits of having living roofs.

I am virtually the only house owner to actually have a herbaceous border with a small tree in the front as well as having a garden at the back stocked with plants. Depressing that so few people are bothered about improving their immediate environments.

  • I take the point but I'd be interested to see if those 2 pics are even in the same area. Looks odd to me or was it meant to just give an illustration?

Confirmed by Tweeter they are adjacent gardens and the flooded one is theirs......

I work in a garden like that on the left. With the previous owner we transformed into a lovely cottage garden, the current owners have covered it in hard landscaping, all plants destroyed by foot balls. Desolate! Nice customers though.
