Keeping curved cuts neat

Browsing through the pictures on LJN I've seen some lovely work, in particular where a curved patio is bordered with an edging, maybe a brick wall of setts for example.

I was wondering what techniques other landscapers use to maintain a nice neat gap between the paving and the edge.

We've done several like this in the past and get them looking sharp but have never settled on a technique. I'm thinking of cases where the edging is in place and then paved rather than the paving cut then the edging put in which is of course easier.

Just be interested in any tricks of the trade for future testing!

  • We use a 115mm grinder blade to mark the top of the slab and then cut the rest from the underside with the sthil saw. Where a perfect uniform pointing gap is required that can't be easily measured (e.g. curves in two directions) we make a cardboard stencil. I hope that is of some small use.

  • Cheers Michael and Rob, both really useful.

Rob, I did try cardboard stencils on a really trick one once and it worked well, I even wondered if it was worth making sets of cardboard sheets matching common slab sizes to use more often.

  • Worth a try Andy but in my van a cardboard stencil would last about a week before it disintegrated. Maybe my van needs a tidy.
