£250 per metre?? That can't be right. Laurels are really cheap hedging plants..... there's a place near me that sells 4' ones for about £15 and 2 per metre should be fine though 3 would fill in quicker. .
Thanks for your comments, just to clarify, it's the instant hedges I'm asking about here, these are trough grown plants, often 3 plants in 1m long units.
Can't see due to size limitations of a trough that they can be instant?
Really wouldn't bother with "trough grown" plants + I doubt you'll get 5' ones in a trough that you could even lift plus a nightmare to plant. Just buy individual plants. Laurels are also very quick to establish and grow so even if you buy them smaller, they should reach 5-6' in no time.
He needs instant 5' hedge.
We planted 2mt plus Laurels on a 30 mt run, they were massive plants in 60 lt pots and a 2 man lift. From memory as it was a few years ago we planted them touching which was approx 1 per metre, they needed a very large deep hole to accomodate the roots and if there had been access would have warranted a mini digger. As to cost think they were around £50 plus vat ex nursery and again from memory think we charged £350 plus vat to fetch them and plant.
As Graham says you can buy 4ft laurels for £15 but you need very large bushy plants for an instant hedge which run of the mill 4ft plants won't achieve don't go just on height you need plants with a minimum 50lt size rootball.
See photos or better still view the plants, as to cost per metre this will depend on the price of the plants but I would put £25 labour on planting each plant and more if you have to fetch them, so assuming the plants are £50 that's £75 per metre and plus vat if applicable to you? Don't know where £250 per metre has come from?
Can pass on our suppliers details if needed but they are North Shropshire.
Hope that's of some help?
Thanks Peter, thats a great help, and luckily I can get a digger to ths site!
The £250 p/m is a ball park price from plants supplied in 1m linear troughs... i.e. it is a sales pitch/product by the online hedge suppliers to supply people with no patience and limited knowledge who want an "instant hedge". People are paying that money or they would not do them... that's business... what he is charging to supply the 'instant' hedge... should reflect those prices also, it is just an exercise in marketing i.e. rebranding hedge plants in a trough... behold... instant hedge... the fact that you could by 4 plants seperately for £50 and a trough and compost for £5 is neither here nor there in the marketig scheme of things.
That's pretty much my thinking, but I am seeing them more and more. Mostly at expensive new builds. Mostly people with very limited gardening experience wanting an immediate finished product.
Duncan, have you looked at https://www.elvedenhedges.com/
No troughs to deal with but fully grown hedges with a choice of species and heights
Not sure of prices but Kevin Harden 07917 162722 will be able to give you an idea of cost and talk you through the installation process
