For what it's worth I have an iPhone 6 which I thought was going to be too big. It seems completely normal now and when I compare it to my old 4s the 4s seems really tiny. I know that iPhones seem to be a bit marmite -you either love them or hate them.
Whatever you go for in the end treat it to a griffin defender case it will keep it looking like new and will save most broken screens.

i have a jcb sitemaster its a basic phone but withstands all the abuse then have a tab in the van for emails etc. suits me well and is pretty cheap as i bought the phone and just pay for a sim only contract., same for the tab.
If you're looking for something good in all weather, found the Sony Xperia ZR is waterproof - you can use it underwater! I suppose really though whichever phone you go for its the case you use that will really give protection.
Also love the JCB phone! Looks tough as nails: http://www.jcbphone.co.uk/handset-range
I have a Nexus 5. Better than the iphone & one third of the price !
The key is the case & screen protector. I use a Slim Armor Case & a Nilkin Toughened Glass Screen Protector.
Get the phone unlocked & move your number to the cheapest provider - probably Tesco.
Buy the phone on ebay/amazon & save a fortune.
If you use a bluetooth headset & apps that read your texts & incoming calls etc together with voice dialling, your phone can stay in your pocket.
