I have a dilemma: should I use bug killer or not?

I actually sowed them by accident: they were contained in a mix of annual seed I bought to fill a space just for this summer.

The border has been moderately successful but the shining star of the border has definitely been the fennel.

Now I'm seeing a devastating destruction by a brown striped shield bug - Graphosoma lineatum.

I tend to steer clear of chemical treatment if I can but I fear, unless I step in and do something soon, that I will lose what's remaining of the fennel plants and also the cosmos plants mixed amongst them which are still to flower.

    Wow! I guess squishing by hand might take a while..... but could be quite satisfying if you like that kind of thing ! Otherwise what about a garlic spray?

    What is the fall out from the infestation that you have? Personally I'd nuke ASAP.

    I did think about picking them off by hand Bridget, but there are just too many.
    I sprayed a test area late yesterday afternoon and the bugs are gone from there.
