How to survey a garden for French Drains?

I have visited a garden a few times over the last month that quite clearly has drainage issues.
Whilst walking on the lawn I leave 2-3cm deep footprints. The lawn has also sunk considerably around the perimeter of the garden.

The garden is roughly 15m wide x 8m and at the bottom of the garden is a retaining wall with 2 or 3 drainage outlets.
The drainage outlets are clogged with mud as they have been installed incorrectly.

I plan to install french drains along the wall and run them into the outlets mentioned. (post clean up)
I will lay fabric, 2" washed gravel, rigid perforated pipe and then bury with washed gravel, fabric and then topsoil.

If the distance from the house to the garden wall is 8m, is 1 line of french drains next to the wall going to suffice?
I'm presuming that the water in the soil is backing up all the way from the wall.  Is there a rule of thumb as to how many french drains to use in a garden?

Many thanks, Ed

  • There is quite a bit of very useful information on the paving expert site. Should guide you if you search under drainage.
