How to start again

I am finishing my maternity leave soon but with such a long break I may as well be starting up the business from scratch. I am looking for advice on how to remind people I exist. The trouble with this business is if you are out of it for any length of time there are always others that will step in and fill the gap. I suppose I may have been lucky with the year being the way it has financialy but with winter fast appraoching I am also worried that its the wrong time of year to be trying to find work.I am a garden designer but I get my hands dirty and will happily do the maintenance side of things as well, I do have a little hire work coming up.What I am really looking for is some restart advertising advice, I am planning on writing to all my local hard landscapers with an introductory offer and I have already started deliverying flyers to all my local garden centres.Any advice?

When I started out just over 8 years ago I posted 3 adverts for 2 weeks (just typed up postcards!) and placed them in three local newsagents' windows. Total cost of advertising was under £5 and I still work for many of the people now who originally enquired back then!

Now I have one advertisement in the local Parish Magazine, costs me £35 +Vat for 1/3 page once every 3 months. Most people who enquire through this advert seek no further quotes (my quotes are usually accepted) it seems like my advert is more like a recommendation from a friend!.

The best way of obtaining work in my own opinion is by recommendation from other customers. When you work for someone, ask them if they are happy and if they know of anyone else who would benefit from your services.

My last piece of advice would also to be not to sell your product/services to cheap as customers will always try and resist price rises although this is far easier said than done!
  • Thank you everyone for your advice all I need to do now is put it into action. Fingers crossed.
