How To Get Rid of a Tree Stump

Removing a tree stump can be a bit of a task. So the team here at Stump eraser have made this handy guide for those of you looking to tackle the job yourself...

If you want to remove a stump yourself the best thing you can do yourself is to try and remove the stump by hand. This method is best for smaller tree stumps or a stump from an old or diseased tree. You’ll need the right tools to do this yourself so make sure you have a chainsaw or limbing saw, a pickaxe, a shovel, a digging bar as well as an axe and a four-wheel-drive vehicle with a chain.

1. Remove the top portion of the trunk but leave enough to leverage.

2. Use the shovel, pick and digging bar to reveal the roots around the stump.

3. Use a hose to wash away the dirt and reveal more dirt.

4. Cut off the major roots with the axe.

5. Slowly push up the stump so more roots are exposed and cut them away with the axe until it is uprooted. If you can’t uproot the stump like this wrap the chain around the stump and try pulling with the vehicle.

This is a simplified guide on how you can get rid of a stump, it can be a significant task. We are experts at stump removal so if you'd rather leave it to the experts contact us or another stump removal expert.

I'm disappointed with this post, I thought you'd show a new thangaled thing that erasers stumps. But no just the old school method.

Would you like my grannies number? To teach her to suck eggs 🤣

    • I thought exactly the same thing.

So the guide to digging out a tree stump is basically 'dig it out'.

And there's me over the years trying to talk them out with verbal persuation.

    • Done this many times, it's good exercise! However I wouldn't use a hose in there you'd just end up tramping muck around.

  • Lots of youtube videos of how to burn out a stump.  I tried it with a big stump & it worked

I find a sledge hammer comes in handy once I detect a bit of give it's a good starting point to exploit the movement .

Seen it done many ways even using reprocating saws ,

      • Thinking about it, I haven’t removed a tree stump since 2005.

I have discovered the easiest approach is to avoid doing it.

        • Reciprocal saw is essential  you can use it in the soil unlike a chainsaw. Either that or hire a stump chopper for bigger stuff. Pretty obvious really.

          • Yes, I laid a shed base for a friend last year, a few tree roots needed cutting back out of the way so he lent me his recip saw. As you say it doesn't matter if the blade gets mucked up and it did the job.

Makes me wonder what a stone aged man would would think of this post-with his flint axe and favourite oxen at his disposal.😂

    • He'd probably be happy to leave the tree where it was 😀
