How to expand?

This is also posted in the BOG so if you have advice but would rather not be too public please feel free to respond there.I've been in business now for about 5 years and have built up a good client base which keeps me busy all year. Last year I found myself turning down work as I just could not fit it in.I have a chap who works with me occasionally but he's now, with no hard feelings and my moral support, stopped as he has just become a full time plumber. After five years I have decided that's it's time to grow and expand. The problem is I don't really know how to do it properly. In the past I've just blundered my way through.I don't want to invest bucket loads of cash on new vans and kit if I end up back where I started.Does anyone have any advice?

  • From time to time I work with another guy on bigger jobs such as a bit of hard landscaping like creating new paths, walls and patios as projects for my regular customers. He's self employed like me and we charge the same fees for the job. I, too have turn work away as I just couldn't fit them in without having to do a 6 day week. One of the ways to do this is to sub contract the work out to another party. You might charge £45 for a job and you pay the third party £30. However, you will have to absolutely trust their reliability, honesty and their workmanship as they are effectively working for you.
