How much sand?

Hi

I have been asked by a client to power hose his tobermoreblock driveway it's roughly 95m2.

How many bags of dry sand do you think i would need to topdress it back in again?

Robbie, we do a bit of block paving maintenance at business parks, including lifting/ reseating small areas and power washing.

For a 25kg bag of Kiln Dried sand, I'd allow 7.5 m2 coverage for NEW laid paving.

If it has been power washed (and depending how much has been dislodged), my memory suggests it is anything up to 20-25m2 per bag. We use B&Q stuff (don't snigger at the back...;-) It's available cheaply and heavily discounted if you buy 5 or more bags at once. Stored inside, they last for ages. If they get wet or surface is too wet, it is a nightmare.

Hopefully one of the paving hardscapers can validate that or suggest alternative coverage rates ?

  • About 5 bags should do it, possibly only 3 or 4 if your not blasting too much of the old sand out. Allow for 5 in your quote. Gary is right on the coverage rates from my experience.

  • My drive is about 30m2, and one bag is enough if I've not gone mad with the pressure washer. 5 is a good bet, but make sure it's dry before you try to brush it in. B&Q's kiln-dried is very good, albeit the only decent thing they sell at a fair price!

Thanks for the advice guys :)

How much per bag in Bag in B&Q, would i be right in thinking a couple of hours would brush it in?

  • Price in B&Q is less than the time to go and buy it, I think a fiver a bag or so? Should be on their website. Time is as fast as you can brush it in; I take my time as it's what holds the blocks in place, going over it in both directions.

I've seen people hire a whacker-plate to go over a washed drive, as it beds the sand in and levels it out again. Given that my drive is laid on 1/2 inch of sand, and more uneven that you can imagine, I don't go mad myself!

Just a quick update, job done.
I spread out 8 bags and ended up topdressing the lawn with probably around 2 or 3 bags worth at the end... Ended up buying it from my local merchant at £3 per bag.

It was easier than I thought it would be to brush it in and I finished it off with a blower.

    Thanks again :)

  • i think you went over the top when you put the sand down,it would have caused you a lot more work taking it off again. i usually put about a third of a bag down over a m2 and spread the rest thinly in front doing a mt run at a time
