Just seen that Toro are introducing a 30inch twin blade walk behind "TurfMaster" mower (in a traditional 4 wheel format - commercial grade ?).Toro Turfmaster (commercial) shown above

Sales info states up to a 40% decrease in cutting time compared to a 21" machine at same speed.

We all know that biggest is not always best - but in this format it could be interesting if they really are robust and fit easily into vans.

Anyone have any experience of Toro's - especially commercial grade models ?

  • i have a old 21" toro abs-loot rubbish with wet grass good and fast with dry. toro bought hayter a while back so they might have come up with something that works in all conditions (i don't like hayter mowers)

  • also forgot to say think of your access is there enough gap to get it onto the lawn

This machine must be heavy and will surely produce ruts on wet soil

  • PRO

58.5kg the spec says, so is that heavy compared to Hayter Ranger's or Danarm 21 Pro's ?

  • Unless it's got a large engine (9-10hp) I can't see how it would cope with commercial bag-filling. And at 58kg there's no way it's got an engine that size on it.

Good for large domestic lawns in dry conditions I guess.

What's interesting is that these are coming out of the US market, where there is a Toro & Exmark model side by side (both seemingly Contractor grade). Interesting, because Toro owns Exmark in the US. Like the fact they are 3-in-1 machines.

It seems there will be a consumer based Toro version for those 'big back lawns' ;-)

Engine is the Kawasaki FJ180V engine, with infinitely variable ground speed up to 4.2mph

The US is much more finicky market than here, so it won't be long before feedback shows if they are suitable and which model wins.

  • I spoke to a Toro dealer at an agri show last week and he recommended this as the mower that does everything and at a great price; I doubted it as soon as I saw the meagre price. At the £999 rp (or thereabouts) straight away you know there's something it's not going to manage. As Dan says the engine's not up to it for a start.

If you do a search on this machine there are very few positive recommendations. For domestic when you can pick your cutting conditions yes, commercial - not a chance! The drive doesn't have the power to take it up inclines, can't push grass into bag, blades struggle...

We are looking for the very machine that this machine says it is...unfortunately this one doesn't hit the mark.

I feel for a commercial audience we would be looking at least to pay £1500-2000 for this machine to know that it does actually do everything it says on the tin out in the field so to speak.

In my opinion there is a market for this sort of machine, but this isn't yet the one.

I think you may be looking at the domestic "TimeMaster" version which is equipped with a B&S engine

However, I am talking about the commercial grade Toro/Exmak version with a different deck & engine which currently retails @ ~$2000. Currently not in the UK or on their UK website.

It is easy to get confused.....

  • Hi All

First post, looking forward to reading, interacting and asking many more.

I have the Timemaster 30". It replaced a ride on 36" mower. The reason I replaced the 36" ride-on for the 30" pedestrian was for clearing the cuttings quickly. The contracts we have are collect only and as you will know, when you get to the end of the job and have then to clear the cuttings from the area you've emptied them, you can add around 30mins to and hour clearing, the Timemaster meant I could simply de-bag, empty and carry on, its saved a lot of effort and time in the most part and I'm glad I purchased it.
In the new year, the Turfmaster 30" commercial is being released to the UK and its the first machine for the new year we will be purchasing.
The Timemaster 30 has its faults though. If its wet and long, the combi blades start mulching the grass because the shoot gets filled quickly.
I've been having to mow sometime three times to get the lawn to the correct height which is very time consuming and costly and if you stop mid way through cutting to move an obsticle for instance, the deck is so full of clippings, it drops and wont re-collect so you have to rake it after. If your patient and clear the deck and bag its easier but again, its time consuming.
If it dry, my god its good, it never clogs the shoot even if its long grass.
The commercial version will have a decent power until too, the Timemaster's slightly under powered for all commercial jobs.
I've had it since last November and its used every day pretty much, the only part which I've had to replace is the rear wheel leveller. I caught it on a lashing strap on the trailer and it bent it past a point of no return.
The briggs its very frugle on fuel and the eco start makes restarts easy.
I love the height adjusters on both the front and rear, easy to get the air flow through to the rear with a one piece adjuster at the front, unlike most commercial mowers which have an adjuster on both front wheels.
The personal pace is wicked, its hard going back to the Masport 600.
I haven't used the side discharge or mulch plug so can't give an opinion as yet.
I have both a Caddy Maxi and a LWB Transporter and It fits with the bars folded flat nicely in the rear of the caddy which has a false bulk head behind the side load doors so you can be sure it'll fit most small vans and easily in a much larger van.
I hope this is all useful.

  • i was watching one of these of ebay a few weeks ago-went for £511. was seriously considering giving it a try but it seemed like a domestic mower that lives in a shed as opposed to jumping in and out a van all day..
