Marestail or horsetail can be killed off with a selective herbicide. There are several types/named products specifically for that weed plant, such as Kurtail from Pro Green and Pearl from Agrigem. You will need your PA1/6 of course to buy and apply it. Progreen have a useful guide too, https://www.progreen.co.uk/content/kill-horsetail-marestail/

Kurtail from progreen (or others) works well

I have used pearl horse/mares tail weed killer from agrigem with great sucess but I also use an adjuvant to help it penetrate the mares tail. But products such as these should only be applied if you are trained and qualified to do so.

  • i have used kurtail to good effect but it may need more than one treatment if it is heaveley infected

Very difficult and requires persistence to limit growth and stop it popping through - depends on a number of factoirs how long this takes as the rhizome/ root system is incredibly invasive and can spread metres underground every year.

Probably best to call/ email us for a chat if you are new to this horrible weed - the worst in my book, by far.....

  • ...if its going to come through where you are turfing does it 'matter'?  It wont grow quicker than grass I'd think.  Its only a problem in beds and when it punches through (alleged) weed proof membrane.

  • Thanks for the feed back, I decided to not take the job on, customer was persistent she wanted it gone straight away, I've had dealing with it in other customers gardens and just pull it out, fortnightly maintenance I found keeps on top of it, I am looking at booking the training for the winter that will allow me to use weedkiller next year would make the maintance easier. Thanks again.

Marestail is a perennial weed so even if you manage to apparently kill it all one year, it comes back the next. Kurtail works well but I tell customers there is only one way to get rid completely.......move house!!

As others have said if you don't have a Pa1 and PA6 it is illegal for you to apply pesticides of any kind. It is a simple course although the questions in the test are very wide ranging but a couple of weeks study between the day courses and tests should let almost all pass if they are paying attention and study the course and trial spray with water before the tests. Very much a pay to play senario in my opinion. The fines and jail for not getting the ticket are not worth the few quid you would earn doing it un certified
