Honda Engine fuel tank insert

On my Honda engined Kazz, there's a red plastic "insert" about 2" long, that sits underneath the fuel filler cap, hanging down into the fuel tank. There's probably an obvious explanation but I'm baffled as to its purpose..... anyone any ideas as my son was asking me today? It can't be to stop things dropping in the tank as the gaps in it are too large to stop anything much.

If memory serves me correct, there two types of filler cap inserts - one with a filter and one without, both use the 'bottom' of the filler cap inserts to indicate max fuel level.

Also stops fuel can filler tube from going in too far.

Believe Honda are quite pessimistic over fuel capacity ( let's face it most fill up to the top anyway)
  • you could be right about stopping the fuel filler tube going in too far......it could then damage the fuel filter... assume there is one (motorbikes certainly have one).... thats in the bottom of the tank. I don't think it can indicate the max fuel level as its so low down.

    From Honda manual:

    Adding Fuel
    1. Remove the fuel tank cap.
    2. Add fuel to the bottom of the fuel level limit in the neck of the fuel tank. Do not overfill. Wipe up spilled fuel before starting the engine.

It's item 16 on the associated Gcv160 parts list; #17636-Z0L-000 Gauge, Fuel Level
    2 versions exist

That item looks best match to that I remember on our honda engined gear
  • Now we know...... they could have made it a bit higher!!

  • I just use it as a guide that I need to put more fuel in.... :-)
