I'm now well into my first year of trading in garden maintenance. I'm very happy and very busy with a full diary. Many of my clients are asking me to replant and redesign parts of their gardens. I have just about completed the RHS Certificate Level 2 at Pershore College which I have found most valuable.I'm getting more and more interested in the design aspect of the business. Has anyone experience of this course (Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Garden Design Level 4)? Its a day a week for two years. A large and expensive commitment that I'm trying to decide if its the right thing to do.Added to this I have an old knee injury which will eventually become a problem, so the design route is a way of future planning for this.Any comments, previous experience, or alternative courses in the west midlands, worcestershire area most welcome.

  • This is how I started out too - did the RHS course at Brinsbury in Sussex, then went on after that to do a BTEC Garden design course, one day a week for two years. It has given me an extra dimension to my work, and though sometimes it is hard to juggle the two aspects of the job (the design work is alway ad hoc, sometimes none ongoing, sometimes two or three, as well as all my regular maintenance work) but on the whole it works out fine. I dont know if the course you are looking at follows a similar curriculum, but I would imagine it is not far off. I also like to think that if I did suffer any injury that prevented me from doing the physical work, I could then work harder to promote the design side of things.
  • My other half did the same course (or very similar) a few years ago at Moulton College. She would recommend it, although the IT skills section was pretty poor - trying to learn Vectorworks Landmark on PCs which would crash three times in a hour, and that was if the tutor turned up!
