Hello,

I was recently made redundant from my job as an engineer and I want to switch careers. After giving it some thought I am really interested in trying to become a Landscaper.

I have tried to do some research by myself and have tried asking the job centre for advice but they have not proved very helpful so far.

So I thought, who better to ask than the people that are already successful Landscapers.

I imagine posts like this one are pop up regularly so apoligies if I am covering old ground here but I would really appreciate it if anybody could give me a nudge in the right direction.

I'm basically wondering where I should start in my quest to get into Landscaping, there is a horticultural course at my local college which seems like a logical step but any advice that anyone could give me would be great and very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Well, maybe someone doing "landscaping" in and around that area needs some help for a few days.....then you can see if you really want to do it. As Vic575 says....knowing what sort of landscaping would help

        • Yeah I think that would be a good idea, maybe help me to properly figure out exactly what type of landscaping would suit me best.

  • Hi Andrew,

as an Englishman who spent some time travelling up to Glasgow and Paisley on various occasions three years ago and as an appreciator of the fantastic ‘Still Game’, welcome aboard.

As landscaping is so diverse it might be good to tell us the area, or areas, that you are interested in pursuing.

So are you thinking of soft landscaping such as turfing? Or maybe patios, decking, garden walls, fences etc.

Those of use with experience in these areas can then offer some advice.

    • Thanks for the welcome! And thanks for the replies.

I think I'd probably be more interested in learning how to do patios, deckings, fences, etc.

I've built a couple of fences in the past and laid a couple of deckings, both times with my dad and very much just making it up as we went along.

I enjoyed doing these projects and think it would probably suit me best.

Well, I'm not your man, I'm in Wiltshire and studiously avoid hard landscaping. Good luck 👍
