Help with quote

Hi, I'd like to ask an opinon or two on this quote please. I have an idea but not a lot of experience in costing this type of job for myself. The job is to weed 36 m2 of border, hoe a trench adjacent to the lawn to prevent weed spread and lay 3inches of decorative bark as a mulch (following application of a general weedkiller). Then cut two lawns approx 20m2 each.I am allowing for the purchase of 3 cube of bark for this job as the client wishes any excess to be given to them for odd jobs. Thanks in advance.Dan

  • cost your materials, labour and add proffit. How long do you think it will take? Then give them a fixed price quote.
  • I don't think there will be much bark left!
  • I think a day's work, but not 100% sure on that. Was really hoping for another figure to be thrown into the mix! I've not seen the garden, only been given the information above by email.

    Cheers

    Hi,
I think you need to know more via a site visit
Do you need to allow for more bark - you have less than 10% spare if you are laying it over 36m2
Is it supplied loose, jumbo bagged, or small bags?
How are you going to spread it, by hand, using wheel barrow etc
How dense are the weeds ?
State of soil - if dry and hard makes its harder, if damp makes it easlier?
Lawns - can you do them in one cut ?
Weedkiller - what are you planning to use & how much ?
Do you have PA1/Pa6 license to apply pesticide on a commercial basis
Do you need to dispose of green waste etc ?
I find breaking the job down to managable chunks helps
Then assign labour estimate materials and allow for mark up/profit.

Whatever you do - recdord it on paper and keep it. If you get the job update it with actual figuires. You 'll thehn get to now whether you are under/over estimating.

    Hope that helps... ?
  • Estimate sent :) Cheers for the input. I advised a 3 inch layer of bark would be needed and any spare will be returned to the client but he wasn't adamant that there HAD to be spare. Also included a clear list of assumptions (ie that waste can be deposited in the green bin, that the borders are slightly lower than the lawn and don't need any soil removed to add the bark etc etc).

    Hi Dan

Glad he's accepted the quote - sounds like you've got it spot on! Are you using a tree surgeon to supply the bark although you have to be careful to specify the quality you can deliver for under £30. We've got 2 tons for a client for next week and have specified no conifer!

  • Best I could do Rob was use google streetview to check out the driveway and access and it looks straightforward, and used aerial maps to check the back garden from a distance. It's too far away to make a visit financially feasible, and the client is a regular (at their other property) so I'm keen to do the job.

The property is empty and I'll have the key so no dogs either!

Thanks anyway folks, enjoy the rain!
  • your getting expensive stuart? is this for Hard-landscaping?

Never price on not seeing the area first.

Approx. 20m2 in a customer's eyes might be 30m actual!

Go see it and then price on £150-200 labour per day plus materials, plus profit.
