Hedging

Hi everyone,I have been asked to give a ball park figure for a hedge to screen a public footpath. They want something quite instant I think but costs might scare them. The length is about 20 m and there isnt alot of room for planting as next to drive way.Any ideas/recommendations for pricing would be appreaciated.Thought Grisselinia might be an idea or privet? Something evergreen for sure but not Leylandii.Any suggestions for wholesale in Hampshire also..Thanks

  • Like the ideas so far. Also depending on height I also like evergreen laurels. They're pollution tolerant and so good alongside a road. The variegated varieties are particularly attractive.
  • This is from The Well Tempered Garden, I think it sounds awful, but it's an idea, I don't remember reading it before, must've skipped over it - I'll quote him, as it is Christopher Lloyd: "When you have only a narrow space at your disposal, it is worth considering ivy as your material. First you have to erect a fence: chestnut paling is cheap and effective. Then you grow ivy up this and by the time the fence has rotted, the ivy will have made a self-supporting barrier, for its stems become tough and woody in time. It can be clipped once or twice annually, like any other hedge. The large-leaved Hedera colchica is the best species for this purpose, and you could intersperse it with the occasional plant of its variegated form to add spice and variety. Ivy thrives as well in shade as in sun, hence there is no need for an ivy hedge to be broad at the base".
  • would taxus be any good ? or buxus? lonicera hedging variety maybe. just ideas
  • £800 ? + based on 40 units x £10@...........mark up , delivery ,planting , quoting .compost .weed fabric? digging e
  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions on this one.I will have a further discussion with the client and see what they really need/want! I always worry about the 'airy fairy, dont really mind' customers!
  • Rather than straight laurel how about laurus nobilis (bay). Its cheaper than taxus, but gives a much nicer finished effect than laurel. I got some gorgeous plants from Surrey Specimen Plants in Chobham for about £90 each at about 1.8m - 2m high. Less expensive if you want a less instant screen. They are shade tolerant, evergreen, and really tough - you can also put them in your cooking :) Steve from Surrey Specimin Plants (used to be Plants to Go) is a member of this network and I'm sure would be happy to help you out. Oh, we planted about 1 per metre at the size quoted.

    Hope this helps.
