hedgehog blocks

at least that's what i think they were called -

i have a retaining wall to price and conventional brick/block is coming out too rich for my customer.   if i can describe these units, they are probably about 25kg each - so one person can handle and lay them.  they have a number of fins on the top, and grooves on the bottom, you stack them up dry and can put a rake on the wall.  the upshot is that they stack on top of each other and make a cracking good retaining wall.

do any of you know who makes them?

cheers

  • Acheson & Glover. Try a search...think they are NI based but sell in GB. Because of my computer knowing too much about me i cannot pretend not to be in NI, so cannot find out for myself!

    It's not cheap though.

  • There are all sorts from most of the major players. Personally aside from acheson glover regal stone (which is very dear) i think they all look a bit naff but i have plenty of clients that have asked for them specifically.

I have just finshed a couple this week. I have used a number of different types from acheson glover as mentioned and tobermore and they are very fast for straight runs or gentle curves. Marshalls also do one i think.

If you need 90 degree corners make sure you chose a system with pre made corner blocks.

I priced up a small retaining wall in block then rendered for a client and also tobermore secura lite as a comparison and the dry walling was about 15% cheaper. Also much less to go wrong with it as there is no mortar or render to crack with any small settlement. Obviously they probably have a shorter life span though.

They can also be used for bigger walls but need designed as with any high retaining wall. The MFTRS are relatively helpful with guideline specs for this.

  • thanks for the input.  i know charcon do the diamond25 - i'll probably go get a quote for these.

the wall i'm looking at ideally has a curve in it which the hedgehogs i was thinking of can't (i think from memory) cope with.  plus with charcon i can get them through a couple of people i know without any issues.

i'll give tobermore a ring anyway as they seem quite up for supplying anyone with the money!  this makes life a lot easier when you can deal direct with the producer!

  • An identical version of the charcon Iblock is made by acheson glover here in NI. I think its mftred under license.

It is a good product but pricey material wise.

  • ah cheers simon.  i think the charcon one was 25kg per unit - weight never comes cheap  :)

the old wall was reversed into, so the hollow version someone else does is a none starter and i reckon this stuff would look pretty good.
