Hedge trimmer problem

Hi, I have a Shindwaiwa long reach cutter that I have had for around 4 years. It has developed a problem where it will start first time and run like a dream but say for instance that I switched it off after 10 or 15 minutes of running, then it will not start again. It seems to only start when cold. It will start if stopped and started straight away but not if there is a gap of a few minutes, like a tea break for example. My biggest problem is very few dealers are interested in looking at it as parts for Shindwaiwa are so difficult to obtain. It's been a fantastic machine up until now. Any ideas?

  • Try spark plug change first. Hot starts are often a problem with a dodgy plug.

  • Failing that, maybe valve adjustment? I haven't worked on a Shindaiwa before, so couldn't advice too much more.

  • is the fuel tank cap letting air in so its not vacuming, spark plug change have you checked for a spark when its hot, the ht lead could be faulty. is air filter clean.it sounds like a petrol problem on the carberetter or choke side maby needs a clean out

  • Your problem is the classic symptoms of the coil on it's way out, they start when cold but won't work when hot,had a look and they are not vry expensive and they are easy to replace. The coil is a little black box at the side of the flywheel and has the HT lead to the spark plug, if you are replacing it yourself make sure there is a fag paper gap between the coil and the flywheel.

  • Thanks everyone for your replies. Yes a garden machinery dealer suggested today that it is probably the ignition coil. Unfortunately I can't find find one online for a Shindwaiwa AH2510. Hunted high and low but nothing out there. I'll just have to make sure I never turn the damn thing off haha! I was wondering if it could make any other brand of coil fit?  But that is something beyond my skills
