Hedge Cutting Platforms - to hire or buy?

Hi Guys,I've just been reading your posts about hedge cutting platforms - wow aren't they expensive?I only have really high hedges to cut a handful of times a year, so would prefer to hire rather than buy. I've searched all of the usual hire places, but no-one seems to hire the Henchman for instance. With just about every garden having a hedge, you would think this would be an easy item to hire! Does anyone hire or know of anywhere I can hire?Any suggestions would be highly appreciatedThanks,Steven

I've got a pair of the (slightly) cheaper Hedgemaster ladders and they are worth their weight in gold. I know they are an expensive investment, but I've won jobs as a result of people seeing me use them as they look professional and give out the right image.

Like Paul and Paul said - they make monster hedges easy and soon pay for themselves.
  • Thanks for all the advice guys, so great to have this forum with so many great people!

Would the Henchman fit on the roof rack of my little Combo van do you think?

"Would the Henchman fit on the roof rack of my little Combo van do you think?"

Yes (depending on the quality of your roof rack. The extender legs are removed easily from the henchman and the main body folds up like a big set of step ladders (probably because they are a big set of step ladders :-0)).

If I think back to the times spent precariously dangling from different ladders over the years, I wish I had bought one years ago. My Henchman is currently stored in the workshop because I don't have hedges but I do have the side of the house to crepie so looking forward to a safe working platform.
  • I also would like to hire a Henchman or similar tall safe ladder. I agree, it does seem silly there aren't any to hire. Although it probably keeps gardeners with decent ladders in business! I definitely don't want to buy one. Is there anyone in the Cambridgeshire area who would like to hire theirs out to me for a day?

Depends on what model you get, the henchman brocheure has the folded dimensions on it for all the models so mesure the space youve got.

I have a Henchman Midi podium step and it fits easily on my SWB transit with space by the side for the extension ladder or swing back steps aswell.

Initially I bought a major and it took up the entire roof rack, however it was farr too big for my needs so I exchanged it for the midi. i have an extender aswell and with the midi and or extender I can cut all my jobs with ease.

I rekon for best versatility go for the closest model to your averadge hedges with the legs at mid extension and if needs be buy an extender this way youll have loads of height leyway.
  • Hi Sarah

We have a henchman. We don't normally hire things out due to misuse and damage ( and a friend virtually cutting his thumb off with my mitre saw). However, a henchman isn't too dangerous and after reading your profile we could do a deal. Where are you in Cambs? We're about 10 miles south of Cambridge.

  • Just like to show you two pics of Karen doing her stuff on the Hedgemaster - and one reason to go for the Henchman instead, that is - the horizontal struts low down between front and back legs (which the Henchman doesn't have) --- these do make straddling shrubs in borders a bit awkward.

  • Hi
Just to let you know that someone is selling these sort of platform ladders for hedge cutting on eBay. They are probably a foreign made copy in the style of the Hedgemaster/Henchman - the item description says they are designed for hedges up to 9' high - so if you don't do many taller hedges it might be something to consider? They are selling for about £136 - although I cannot vouch for their reliablity, construction or robustness!

The item number if you want to check it out is: 230374380621

Re: hiring out Henchman in return for computer services (I presume). That's a stroke of luck! This network is more useful than I thought. What kind of deal are you thinking? I am living just outside Little Shelford.
